The Hook: Five Words for Mahanadi’s Water

Connect

A poet on the banks of the Mahanadi can call its water जल, नीर, वारि, सलिल or तोय — and the cloud above it जलद, नीरद or वारिद. Look closely: the cloud words are the water words plus -द (“giver”). The lotus is जलज, नीरज, वारिज — water words plus -ज (“born of”).

The question this page answers: which synonym sets and antonym pairs are worth memorising for Class X-level Hindi, and which word-building patterns let you crack the rest without memorising them?

Why it matters for CGPSC: “पर्यायवाची एवं विपरीत शब्द” is named in the Mains Paper I General Hindi syllabus, and synonym or antonym items are a quick-scoring format in the Hindi part of Prelims Paper II. Usually one option is a near-lookalike (अनल for अनिल) — the whole question is that trap.

Synonyms (पर्यायवाची शब्द)

Paryayvachi (पर्यायवाची) words have the same or nearly the same meaning. Hindi borrows most of them from Sanskrit (tatsam), so formal sets are long.

Decode, don’t memorise: the suffix pattern

Suffix (meaning)+ जल+ नीर+ वारि+ पय / अंबुGives
-ज (born of)जलजनीरजवारिजअंबुजlotus
-द (giver)जलदनीरदवारिदपयोद, अंबुदcloud
-धर (bearer)जलधर———cloud
-धि (store)जलधिनीरधिवारिधिपयोधिsea

The same logic works for the sky: -कर (“maker”): दिनकर, दिवाकर, प्रभाकर = sun (maker of day/light); निशाकर, सुधाकर = moon (maker of night/nectar); रत्नाकर = sea (store of gems).

Antonyms (विलोम / विपरीतार्थक शब्द)

Vilom (विलोम) words have opposite meanings. Two ways they arise:

1. Formed with a prefix (उपसर्ग)

PrefixPairs

Grammar class must match
An antonym keeps the same part of speech. The antonym of the noun उन्नति is the noun अवनति; of the adjective सुलभ, the adjective दुर्लभ. An option that switches class (noun for adjective) is wrong even if the meaning is opposite.

Memory Tricks

Anchor these
  • “ज-द-धि: born, giver, store” — -ज lotus, -द cloud, -धि sea. Works for जल, नीर, वारि, पय, अंबु.
  • अनल–अनिल: “i for air” — अनिल has the इ and is wind; अनल is fire.
  • -कर makes: दिन/दिवा/प्रभा + कर = sun; निशा/सुधा + कर = moon.
  • कृत + ज्ञ vs कृत + घ्न — कृतज्ञ is one who knows (ज्ञ) what was done (कृत) for him; कृतघ्न is one who destroys (घ्न) it.
  • Stay–move: स्थावर (fixed, like स्थिर) vs जंगम (moving, like गमन).

Don’t Confuse

ThisvsThat
अनल = fireअनिल = wind
जलज / नीरज = lotusजलद / नीरद = cloud; जलधि / नीरधि = sea
अंबर = sky (also cloth)अंबु = water; अंबुज = lotus; अंबुद = cloud
दिनकर / दिवाकर = sunनिशाकर = moon; निशाचर = demon / night-wanderer
प्राचीन ↔ अर्वाचीननूतन ↔ पुरातन
कृतज्ञ ↔ कृतघ्नआस्तिक ↔ नास्तिक

Common Mistakes

Trap 1: The one-letter lookalike
“Which is NOT a synonym of जल?” with options नीर, तोय, अनल, सलिल — अनल (fire) hides among water words because it sounds like अनिल and looks like a jal-word. Check every option’s meaning, not its sound.
Trap 2: The 'nearly opposite' option
For प्राचीन, both नवीन and अर्वाचीन look opposite. The standard paired antonym is अर्वाचीन; if both appear, choose the paired form. Likewise कृतज्ञ → कृतघ्न, not just “अकृतज्ञ”.
Trap 3: Synonym of a word with two meanings
अंबर means sky and cloth; कर means hand, tax and ray. When the question gives one sense (or a sentence), pick the synonym of that sense.

Practice

Level 1: Foundation

Give one synonym (1–3) or the antonym (4–6).

  1. सूर्य 2. कमल 3. पर्वत 4. आयात 5. स्थावर 6. सुगंध
Answers (any listed synonym is correct)
  1. रवि / भानु / दिनकर / भास्कर
  2. पंकज / जलज / सरोज / राजीव
  3. गिरि / शैल / अचल / भूधर
  4. निर्यात
  5. जंगम
  6. दुर्गंध

Level 2: Prelims MCQs

All questions are original practice items in CGPSC style.

प्रश्न 1. निम्नलिखित में से कौन-सा शब्द ‘जल’ का पर्यायवाची नहीं है?

(a) नीर (b) तोय (c) सलिल (d) अनल

Answer: (d) अनल
अनल means fire (a synonym of अग्नि). नीर, तोय and सलिल all mean water. The trap is the sound-alike अनिल (wind), which is also not water — but it is not among the options.

प्रश्न 2. ‘नीरद’ शब्द का अर्थ है:

(a) कमल (b) बादल (c) समुद्र (d) नदी

Answer: (b) बादल
नीर (water) + द (giver) = the giver of water, i.e. a cloud. नीरज would be lotus and नीरधि the sea — the -ज / -द / -धि pattern.

प्रश्न 3. ‘प्राचीन’ का उपयुक्त विलोम शब्द है:

(a) अर्वाचीन (b) पुरातन (c) सनातन (d) प्राक्तन

Answer: (a) अर्वाचीन
अर्वाचीन means modern or recent, the standard paired antonym of प्राचीन. पुरातन, सनातन and प्राक्तन all mean old or ancient — they are near-synonyms of प्राचीन, not opposites.

Answer: (c) केवल 1 और 3
Statements 1 and 3 are standard antonym pairs. Statement 2 is wrong: अनिल means wind (वायु); the fire word is अनल.

प्रश्न 5. सूची-I को सूची-II से सुमेलित कीजिए:

सूची-Iसूची-II (अर्थ)
A. सरोज1. सूर्य
B. पयोद2. समुद्र
C. रत्नाकर3. बादल
D. दिवाकर4. कमल

(a) A-4, B-2, C-3, D-1 (b) A-3, B-4, C-2, D-1 (c) A-4, B-3, C-1, D-2 (d) A-4, B-3, C-2, D-1

Answer: (d) A-4, B-3, C-2, D-1
सरोज (born in a lake) = lotus; पयोद (giver of water) = cloud; रत्नाकर (store of gems) = sea; दिवाकर (maker of day) = sun. Option (a) swaps cloud and sea — exactly the -द / -धि confusion.

Level 3: Speed Drill — Solve in 60 Seconds

Mark each pair S (synonyms), A (antonyms) or N (neither) — all ten in under 60 seconds. In Mains Paper I, synonym and antonym items are usually short answers; one exact word earns the mark.

  1. उदय — अस्त 2. हय — तुरंग 3. अनल — अनिल 4. नूतन — पुरातन 5. शशि — इंदु 6. राग — द्वेष 7. विटप — पादप 8. जलद — जलधि 9. सापेक्ष — निरपेक्ष 10. कनक — हेम
Answers
  1. A 2. S (horse) 3. N (fire, wind) 4. A 5. S (moon) 6. A 7. S (tree) 8. N (cloud, sea) 9. A 10. S (gold)

Key Takeaways

Key Takeaways
  1. Learn synonym sets for nature words (fire, water, wind, sky, earth, sun, moon, sea, cloud, lotus) — they recur most.
  2. Decode compounds by their last part: -ज born of, -द giver, -धि store, -कर maker.
  3. Antonyms are either prefix-made (ज्ञान–अज्ञान, मान–अपमान) or independent pairs (प्राचीन–अर्वाचीन, स्थावर–जंगम) that must be memorised.
  4. An antonym keeps the same part of speech; prefer the standard paired form.
  5. Every synonym question hides one sound-alike (अनल/अनिल, निशाकर/निशाचर) — check meaning, not sound.
