Daily Challenge — 25 October 2026
Week 3 of Mission CGPSC 2027 · Kings & Cabinets — The Union executive and Parliament, alongside the Kalachuris of Ratanpur and the Maratha years. See the full plan.
Parliament
Consider the following statements about a joint sitting of the two Houses of Parliament under Article 108:
- It can be summoned to resolve a deadlock over a Constitution Amendment Bill.
- It is presided over by the Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
- Only three joint sittings have been held, in 1961, 1978 and 2002.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
Article 108 applies to ordinary and financial bills only; there is no joint sitting for Money Bills or Constitution Amendment Bills, so statement 1 is wrong. The Speaker presides (then the Deputy Speaker, then the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha). Joint sittings have been held only in 1961 (Dowry Prohibition), 1978 (Banking Service Commission Repeal) and 2002 (POTA), as of 2026.
Maratha Rule in Chhattisgarh
During the British superintendency of Chhattisgarh (1818–1830), the headquarters of the region was shifted from Ratanpur to Raipur by:
Superintendent Colonel Agnew (1818–1825) moved the headquarters from Ratanpur to Raipur. Captain Edmund was the first superintendent and Crawford the last; Charles Elliot became the first Deputy Commissioner of Chhattisgarh only in 1855, after the annexation of Nagpur under the Doctrine of Lapse.
Basic Numeracy
What is the compound interest on ₹10,000 at 10% per annum for 2 years, compounded annually?
Amount = \( 10000 \times (1.1)^2 = 12100 \), so CI = ₹2,100. ₹2,000 is the simple interest; the extra ₹100 is the interest earned in the second year on the first year’s interest of ₹1,000.
