India: Location and Extent
India's latitude-longitude extent, area and rank, Standard Meridian, Tropic of Cancer states, land borders and neighbours for CGPSC Prelims and Mains.
Prerequisites
- Basic idea of latitude, longitude and time: 15° of longitude = 1 hour, so 1° = 4 minutes.
- Chhattisgarh: Location, Extent and Boundaries — the state version of this page; read them as a pair.
The Hook: Where Two Lines Cross in Surguja
India has one clock for the whole country, set by a single line of longitude: 82°30′ E. Across the northern hills of Chhattisgarh, the same line runs close to another famous line, the Tropic of Cancer (कर्क रेखा). Only two states, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, are crossed by both.
Why did India pick 82°30′ E? Why does the sun rise in Arunachal about two hours before it rises in Kachchh? And why does India’s “official” coastline suddenly read 11,098 km instead of 7,516 km? This page answers all three.
Why it matters: Prelims loves exact numbers here (extent, area rank, border lengths, states on the Tropic and the meridian). Mains GS-III uses location to explain India’s climate, its strategic place in the Indian Ocean and its regional ties.

- Largest state: Rajasthan. Chhattisgarh: 1,35,192 km², about 4.1% of India, the 9th largest state.
- Political units: 28 states and 8 Union Territories (as of 2026).
Standard Meridian and Indian Standard Time
| Point | Detail |
|---|---|
| Indian Standard Meridian | 82°30′ E |
| Passes near | Mirzapur (Uttar Pradesh) |
| IST vs GMT/UTC | 5 hours 30 minutes ahead (82.5 × 4 min = 330 min) |
| States it passes through | 5: Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh |
| East–west time gap | About 2 hours (about 30° of longitude × 4 min) |
The Tropic of Cancer
The Tropic of Cancer (23°30′ N) divides India into almost two equal halves: the southern half lies in the tropical zone, the northern half in the sub-tropical zone.
It passes through 8 states, west to east:
| # | State | # | State |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gujarat | 5 | Jharkhand |
| 2 | Rajasthan | 6 | West Bengal |
| 3 | Madhya Pradesh | 7 | Tripura |
| 4 | Chhattisgarh | 8 | Mizoram |
Land Frontier and Neighbours
India’s land border is about 15,106.7 km (Ministry of Home Affairs figure). It touches seven countries:
| Neighbour | Border length (km) | Indian states / UTs on the border |
|---|---|---|
| Bangladesh | 4,096.7 (longest) | West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram |
| China | 3,488 | Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh |
| Pakistan | 3,323 | Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh |
| Nepal | 1,751 | Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim |
| Myanmar | 1,643 | Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram |
| Bhutan | 699 | Sikkim, West Bengal, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh |
| Afghanistan | 106 (shortest) | Ladakh (through the area under Pakistan’s occupation) |
Maritime neighbours: Sri Lanka (across the Palk Strait and Gulf of Mannar) and the Maldives (south of Lakshadweep). Indonesia, Thailand and Myanmar share maritime boundaries in the Andaman Sea region.
Water bodies and channels
| Feature | Separates |
|---|---|
| Palk Strait | Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka |
| Adam’s Bridge (Ram Setu) | Chain of shoals between Pamban (Rameswaram) and Mannar |
| Ten Degree Channel | Andaman group from the Nicobar group |
| Duncan Passage | South Andaman from Little Andaman |
| Nine Degree Channel | Minicoy from the main Lakshadweep group |
| Eight Degree Channel | Minicoy (India) from the Maldives |
Coastline: The Old and the New Figure
| Figure | Source and basis |
|---|---|
| 7,516.6 km | The long-used figure (mainland about 6,100 km + islands). Computed in the 1970s from coarse maps (scale 1:45,00,000) |
| 11,098.81 km | Re-measured by the National Hydrographic Office with the Survey of India at a finer scale (1:2,50,000) using GIS and the High-Water Line. Accepted after concurrence of coastal states and promulgated by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (circular of 29 April 2025) |
- The coastline did not “grow”. A finer scale captures more bends, creeks and islands; this is the coastline paradox.
- Gujarat has the longest coastline in both counts (revised figure 2,340.62 km).
- Exam tip: if a question’s options include only 7,516.6 km, answer that. If they include 11,098.81 km, the question is testing the 2025 revision.
Significance of India’s Location (for Mains)
- Central in the Indian Ocean: The peninsula juts about 1,600 km into the Indian Ocean, between West Asia and East/South-East Asia. The Indian Ocean is the only ocean named after a country.
- Trade routes: The Suez Canal (1869) and the Strait of Malacca sea lanes pass close to India; this underlies port-led development under the Sagarmala Programme and the SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision.
- Land routes: Himalayan passes historically linked India with Central Asia and Tibet (ideas, Buddhism, trade).
- Climate: The Tropic of Cancer and the Himalayan wall together give India a tropical monsoon type of climate, even in its sub-tropical north. See Climate.
- Strategic islands: Andaman and Nicobar overlooks the Strait of Malacca; Lakshadweep overlooks the Arabian Sea routes.
- Chhattisgarh’s landlocked position: As a central, landlocked state, it depends on east-coast ports (Visakhapatnam, Paradip) for exports such as Bailadila iron ore.

Common Mistakes
- “The Tropic of Cancer passes through Odisha.” False. It passes through Jharkhand and West Bengal to the north of Odisha. Odisha is on the Standard Meridian list, not the Tropic list.
- “Longest land border is with China / Pakistan.” False. It is with Bangladesh (4,096.7 km).
- “The Standard Meridian passes through Jharkhand.” False. The five states are UP, MP, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.
- “India is the 6th largest country.” False. It is 7th; Australia is 6th.
- “North–south extent is less than east–west extent.” False. 3,214 km vs 2,933 km.

Level 3: Mains Answer Writing
Q1. (150–200 words) Discuss how India’s location has shaped its climate, trade and strategic interests.
Model answer outline
- Intro: India lies wholly in the northern and eastern hemispheres (8°4′–37°6′ N, 68°7′–97°25′ E), at the head of the Indian Ocean, the only ocean named after a country.
- Body:
- Climate: Tropic of Cancer halves the country; the Himalayan wall blocks cold Central Asian winds, so even the north has a monsoon-type climate.
- Trade: Peninsula projects about 1,600 km into the ocean, close to the Suez–Malacca sea lanes; port-led growth under Sagarmala.
- Strategy: Andaman and Nicobar near the Strait of Malacca; Lakshadweep on Arabian Sea routes; SAGAR vision.
- Land links: Himalayan passes carried trade and Buddhism; today they are sensitive borders (China, Pakistan).
- Time: One IST at 82°30′ E despite a 2-hour sunrise gap; North-East time-zone debate.
- Chhattisgarh angle: Central, landlocked state crossed by both the Tropic and the Standard Meridian; depends on Visakhapatnam and Paradip ports for mineral exports.
- Conclusion: Location is a resource; maritime and continental strengths must be used together.
